5 Dashboard Warning Lights You Should Not Ignore

Modern cars use dashboard warning lights to tell you when something needs attention. Some are advisory; others are urgent. Here are five you should never ignore.

1. Engine management (check engine) light

An amber engine light means the car has detected a fault. It might be minor or serious — the only way to know is to read the fault codes with a diagnostic tool. Do not just ignore it or clear it.

2. Oil pressure light

A red oil light means low oil pressure — potentially serious. Stop safely and switch off as soon as you can; running the engine with low oil pressure can cause expensive damage.

3. Brake warning light

This can mean low brake fluid, worn pads, or a fault with the braking system. Because it is safety-critical, get it checked straight away.

4. Battery / charging light

If this stays on while driving, your battery is not charging properly — often an alternator or belt issue. You may have limited time before the car stops, so get it looked at promptly.

5. Coolant temperature light

A red temperature light means the engine is overheating. Stop safely and let it cool — driving on can warp or crack the engine.
